Al Hirt had been around for a while and already had recorded numerous albums. He began playing in Big Bands in the Forties, including both Dorsey's, Benny Goodman and Horace Heidt. He then went back home to New Orleans playing in Dixieland bands and eventually with his own Dixieland band on Bourbon Street. Billy May produced a top 20 album, Horn a Plenty in 1961, that gave Al a mellow swing sound much like he had done with Frank Sinatra. This was followed by Trumpet and Strings with large and elaborate orchestral arrangements that only grazed the album charts
