Herbert von Karajan 5 April 190816 July 1989 was an Austrian orchestra and opera conductor, one of the most renowned 20th-century conductors. His obituary in The New York Times described him as probably the world's best-known conductor and one of the most powerful figures in classical music. Karajan conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for thirty-five years. Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven's complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan's 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. Karajan: Beethoven Symphonies 1963 is a set of studio recordings made in 1961 and 1962 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It is the second of four cycles of Beethoven's nine symphonies that von Karajan conducted, and the first of three for the German record label Deutsche Grammophon. The complete set was first released in 1963 in Europe, and as a result the cycle of symphonies is now generally known as the 1963 cycle. This distinguishes it from a 1977 cycle of nine. Herbert von Karajan first conducted Beethovens Second Symphony in Trieste in 1947. It was the last of the nine symphonies to enter his repertory, as was often the case in an era when Beethovens two early symphonies were seen as prefatory to the larger business of the Nine. From the 1960s onwards, Karajans brilliantly articulated performances with the Berliner Philharmoniker never underestimated the importance of the work in the Beethoven canon. At no time in his career was Karajan fooled by Beethovens jesting reference to the Eighth as my little symphony.
