Paranoid is a song by Black Sabbath that appears on the band's second album Paranoid. Supposedly, the members of Black Sabbath put together this song in 15 minutes based on a solo by Tony Iommi. In the early 70s, they were the first to pair heavily distorted, sonically dissonant blues rock at slow speeds with lyrics about drugs, mental pain and abominations of war, thus giving birth to generations of metal bands that followed in their wake. Theres an old saying that goes, If you remember the 1960s, you werent there. But theres another, less well-known motto for the decade that follows: If you remember the 1970s, then your name probably isnt Ozzy Osbourne. From their self-titled debut in 1970 right up to 1978s Never Say Die, Ozzys final 70s album before being sacked, Black Sabbath concocted a whole host of magnificent, monolithic sounds. Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, who wrote the lyric, explained the song's meaning to Mojo magazine June 2013: Basically, it's just about depression, because I didn't really know the difference between depression and paranoia. It's a drug thing when you're smoking a joint you get totally paranoid about people, you can't relate to people. The group never charted again in the UK Top 10, but that wasn't a problem since album and ticket sales more than made up for it. Many UK rock bands, including Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, put little emphasis on singles. Black Sabbath. Type: Full-length. February 20th, 2020.
