Kaya is the tenth studio album released by Bob Marley and the Wailers in 1978. The album consists of tracks recorded alongside those present on the Exodus album in 1977. The album has a very relaxed, laid back sound, lacking much of the militant quality of the Wailers lyrically and musically. They received criticism for 'going soft' as a result of the general sound of the album as well as the theme: songs primarily revolving around love, as well as marijuana. The album consists of tracks recorded alongside those present on the Exodus. This was a testament not only to Bob Marleys phenomenal popularity at this point but also to the mans impressive work ethic and his ability to shrug off a worsening health problem. The toe injury which had forced Marley to cancel two shows at the end of the Exodus tour in May 1977 was diagnosed as Acral Melanoma, a malignant skin cancer. On 22 April 1978, a month before the start of the Kaya world tour, Marley and the Wailers pulled off a gig of unique historical and political resonance when they headlined the One Love Peace Concert at the National Stadium in Kingston. Kaya 40 is one such album. Forty years since its original release, Kaya has been carefully and tenderly updated by son Stephen and the results, whilst sometimes subtle, are quite brilliant. The objective was to heavily use the original versions of the songs from demos and session recordings to create something as authentic as possible. Recorded with what was a new version of The Wailers including wife Rita and, Carlton and Aston Barrett the album was first released just before the legendary One Love Peace Concert in Kingston, Jamaica in June 1978 following his return from London exile after a failed assassination attempt in 1976. And the palpable musical tension that simmered beneath the surface on the Wailers' earlier material gave way to a more laid-back riddim that was more comfortable but a bit less demanding. Kaya presented a gentler and friendlier version of Bob Marley & the Wailers, but it also documented Marley and his group at the peak of their abilities. By the time of it's recording, in 1977 during the sessions that produced the Masterpiece EXODUS, he and the new incarnation of The Wailers had hit their creative stride. Much controversy surrounded this album for several reasons not the least of which was it's title and people initially thought these were leftover songs form EXODUS. Nothing could be further from the truth, this is an album where we found Bob in a relaxed state, perhaps for the first time in his life and these songs reflect that
