Music in Twelve Parts is a set of twelve pieces written between 1971 and 1974 by the composer Philip Glass. This work cycle was originally scored for ten instruments, played by five musicians: three electric organs, two flutes, four saxophones two soprano, one alto, one tenor and one female voice. Only the organ can be heard throughout the other instruments are not playing simultaneously the whole time. Only one piece was originally written, which was called Music in Twelve Parts because it was. 1 Part 1 2 Part 2 3 Part 3 Genre: Label: All uploads are from my personal collection and are taken directly from CD or Vinyl. NOTES: Music in Twelve Parts, written by Philip Glass between 1971 and 1974, is a deliberate, encyclopedic compendium of some techniques of repetition the composer had been evolving since the mid 1960s. It holds an important place in Glasss repertory not only from a historical vantage point as the longest and most ambitious concert piece for the Philip Glass Ensemble but from a purely aesthetic standard as well, because Music in Twelve Parts is both a massive theoretical exercise and a deeply engrossing work of art. Tim Page. PUBLISHER: Dunvagen Music Publishers. RELATED RECORDINGS. Music in Twelve Parts is likely still the ultimate act of picking up the gauntlet thrown down by Erik Satie in Musique d'ameublement. One might wonder if a studio recording of a work like this might not be considered definitive by its very nature, given the level of control over the output of a piece that the studio affords, thereby rendering a live recording - particularly by the same ensemble - kind of redundant. A concert performance of Parts 1 and 2 already appears on OMM's earlier disc Philip Glass Ensemble Live in Monterrey Mexico. Listeners will find that they gravitate to different parts of the piece and there is certainly no need to take it all in at once. Music in Twelve Parts. Play album. Get album. Before 1977,nearly all of Virgins best albums were released on their budget 'Caroline' offshoot, and for many this was their first exposure to Philip Glass's take on structured Glass himself doesn't agree with that definition of his music. It certainly a more academic and considered form of Minimalism than most of his contemporaries, except maybe later Steve Reich, with no room for musicians to be let off the leash at any point. I certainly play Glass's music more than any of the other 'minimalists',probably because its more accessable, an
