Stereolab are a UK-based band whose style, mixing 1950s1960s pop and lounge music with the motorik beat of krautrock, was one of the first to which the term post-rock was applied. They are noted for the use of vintage keyboard instruments like Moog synthesizers and Vox and Farfisa organs. Stereolab is also notable for founding their own record label, Duophonic Records, with a grant from UK charity The Princes Trust. Wow and Flutter is an EP by the post-rock band Stereolab, which served as the second single from their 1994 album Mars Audiac Quintet. The EP was also released on CD and 10 vinyl. Two of the tracks are alternative versions of songs on Mars Audiac Quintet. Wow and Flutter itself is a re-recording, while Nihilist Assault Group, Pts. 3-5 comprises sections excised from the album version. Wow and Flutter is one of the band's definitive moments, and sounds even better when isolated from the sometimes numbingly great album. Nihilist Assault Group Parts 3-5 is a reworking of a track from Mars Audiac Quintet. On the album the song is a noisy sprint that builds and builds in intensity the EP version cuts dead about three minutes in, shifting to a mutated synth-drone with a vocal section before coming back in the last minute-and-a-half with a furious, almost punk, ending. Wow And Flutter. Released: Oct 2002. Label: eOne Music. There is so much good material on this collection of radio sessions from 1991 to 2001 that it s almost easier not to listen to it at all. From the driving, Neu-esque indie pop to the tropicalia-postmodern overload 10 years later, these songs are bursting with new energy even right now Jon Pruett. Naught More Terrific Than Man.
