Life in a Tin Can is the Bee Gees' eleventh studio album ninth worldwide, released in January 1973. The Bee Gees travelled to Los Angeles to record Life in a Tin Can. However, it was unable to prevent a commercial decline with the album criticised for a lack of innovation. Despite its low sales and poor chart performance, Life in a Tin Can was awarded Album of the Year by Record World magazine. It was the first Bee Gees album to bear the RSO label in the US. Life in a Tin Can 1972 saw the Bee Gees move from recording in England to sunny Los Angeles. This is one of the groups shorter albums, at just eight songs. Its also a more acoustic album than the sweeping orchestral feats of Odessa and Trafalgar, allowing crisp vocals to shine. Rock and country prevail on this comparatively upbeat collection of songs. Bouncy and upbeat single Saw a New Morning became a number one hit in Hong Kong. Its B-Side, My Life Has Been a Song is an affecting ballad, carried by piano and harmonica. Bee Gees imitation in the first place. With their new album, Life in a Tin Can, conditions are slightly improved, but theres really nothing to get excited about. Of the eight tracks, two are typical slushy ballads with scant redeeming melodic value. Another, Living In Chicago, is a fairly pretty but overlong number in the same vein, with plodding acoustic guitar dominating instead of the usual orchestra. Three other cuts fall into a melodramatic, pseudo-Western style which the Bee Gees have been toying with for some time. And, while the countryish tunes are pleasant enough, the pose is rath. The Bee Gees moved their base of operations from England to America, specifically to Los Angeles, in the early '70s, and Life in a Tin Can was the result of their first recording sessions out there. This was the album that heralded the group's collapsing fortunes. It seemed to break no new ground for the group, made up of tuneful if not always memorable material. Even some of the better tunes, like Living in Chicago, ran too long for their own good, and many fans felt like they'd begun to have heard it all before. Play jigsaw puzzles for free Home.
