After the Classic Quartet disbanded in 1967, Dave Brubeck planned to focus his time on composing. However, in 1968, Brubeck formed a new quartet-Jack Six bass, Alan Dawson drums, and Gerry Mulligan sax-to perform at the second annual Newport Jazz Festival in Mexico. Gerry and Dave became great friends and they toured together for the next five years, billed as Dave Brubeck Trio and Gerry Mulligan or occasionally Dave Brubeck Trio with Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan. They toured off and on until 1995, appearing nightly with their own groups and coming together at the end of the set for a duet.
