Kiss the Crystal Flake is the sixth studio album by the northern California rock band The Mother Hips. The songs Time We Had and Time-Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear were featured as playable tracks in the music video game Rock Band. Time-Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear also includes a reference to the infamous Mexican patriotbandit Joaquin Murrieta with the lyrics: Were you out in Monterey In Joaquin Murrieta's day Adobe huts in the cypress groves Is where the rich man now builds his homes. The Mother Hips broke a long silence with the excellent Red Tandy EP in 2006 and they maintain the excellence on 2007's Kiss the Crystal Flake. Always a band you could count on for fairly straightforward AOR-influenced rock & roll mixed with some heart-on-sleeve balladry, the Hips deliver exactly what you would expect: a solid batch of rockers and ballads recorded cleanly and crisply and performed with an energetic, light touch by the group. Any CDalbum by The Mother Hips is reason to celebrate, but I would point to the consistent masterpieces: Green Hills of Earth, & Pacific Dust for MH at their recorded best. But I've never seen a bad live show out of at least 10 times I've seen them. These guys could teach a course on how to be a great live band. A few songs on Kiss The. sound rushed, sloppy & unfinished. Two of my favorite guitar players actually play an occasionally crappy riff.
