And suddenly, in grand fashion, Wilco were cooking. On their third album, Summer Teeth, Wilco create the roots-rock answer to Becks Odelay, if not to Brian Enos Another Green World. Like Beck and Eno, and Brian Wilson and the Beatles before them, Wilco use the studio like an instrument, unreeling minimovies of the imagination, blending and then bending the sound of guitars, drums and a thrift-shop array of vintage classic literature, poetry, and personal trauma, Summerteeth is an explosion of pain and childish drama. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the album most closely associated with the story of Wilco, the one where Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennetts working relationship was irrevocably ruptured, the one that led to the split from the label and changed the way people hear albums, and the one whose making was agonizingly captured by Sam Jones cameras on the famous documentary I Am.
